2025 Annual Automotive Insights Report – Australia’s Used-Car Market Enters a More Balanced Phase in 2025, with Dealer Activity and Electrification Gaining Momentum

AutoGrab, Australia’s leading automotive intelligence platform, has released  the 2025 Annual Automotive Insights Report (AIR), prepared in partnership with the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA), highlighting a year of stabilisation across the national used-vehicle market, alongside a structural shift toward dealer-led transactions and accelerating demand for electrified vehicles.

National used-car sales in 2025 reached approximately 2.32 million vehicles, broadly in line with 2024 levels, signalling that the extreme volatility experienced during the pandemic and post-pandemic period has eased and the market is moving toward more sustainable trading conditions.

A key development over the year was the rising role of franchised and independent dealers in total transaction volumes. Dealer sales lifted their share of the market to almost half of all used-car transactions, supported by improved stock availability, more disciplined pricing and stronger consumer confidence in the value of certified vehicles, finance and after-sales support.

SUVs continued to consolidate their position as the dominant segment of the used-car market, recording year-on-year growth, while passenger cars experienced a further decline in volumes. Light commercial vehicles, particularly utes, remained resilient, reflecting ongoing demand from both private buyers and small businesses.

Electrified powertrains were a standout growth area. Hybrid and battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales expanded at a significantly faster rate than the overall market, with BEV volumes rising strongly off a low base and premium and mass-market brands alike recording triple-digit growth in some models.

From a brand and model perspective, Toyota maintained its position as the leading marque by volume, and the Ford Ranger again emerged as the country’s most transacted used vehicle, underlining the continued strength of dual-cab utes in both metropolitan and regional markets.

AutoGrab’s analysis suggests that the 2025 results provide a constructive backdrop for 2026, with improved data transparency, normalising supply chains and rising dealer engagement expected to support more informed pricing and inventory strategies.

“The 2025 Automotive Insights Report confirms the used car market has moved beyond the distortions of recent years and into a more stable, sustainable phase.

What we’re seeing now is a structurally healthier market, where disciplined pricing, better stock availability and data-led decision-making are once again central to dealer performance

With supply chains normalising and transparency improving, the 2025 results provide a constructive foundation for 2026. Dealers and OEMs now have a clearer line of sight to pricing, risk and inventory planning than at any point in the last five years .”
