MEDIA STATEMENT
10 September 2025
AutoGrab, Australia’s leading automotive platform, in partnership with the Australian
Automotive Dealer Association (AADA), has released the August 2025 Automotive Insights
Report (AIR), delivering a definitive view of national used car sales and listings across both
dealer and private markets.
While the August figures indicate a modest cooling in overall sales compared with July,
dealer inventory remains resilient, and vehicles are selling at the fastest rate seen this year.
Notably, the electric vehicle (EV) segment continues to show volatility, with sales and
listings both contracting sharply during the month.
Key August Insights
– Sales ease modestly: National used car sales totalled 203,480 in August, down 1.3%
month-on-month. Victoria, Tasmania, and the ACT were the outliers, recording slight
growth.
– Vehicles moving faster: Average days to sell fell to 43.9 in August, improving from
44.6 in July. This marks the fifth consecutive monthly reduction since the March peak
of 51.3 days.
– Dealer presence strong: Dealers represented 46.1% of sales and 58.9% of listings.
Active listings rose to 339,932—the second-highest level recorded in 2025.
– EVs remain volatile: Used EV sales declined 9.8% to 2,750 units, just 1.35% of all used
car sales. Listings also dropped significantly, underscoring unpredictable consumer
demand.
The steady decline in average selling times underscores sustained consumer appetite
when vehicles are competitively priced. By contrast, the EV market remains inconsistent,
with monthly sales and listings fluctuating as more models enter circulation.

The August results highlight a market adjusting to competitive pressures while maintaining
underlying strength:
The consistent reduction in average days to sell demonstrates the resilience of consumer
demand. Well-priced vehicles are moving faster than at any point this year, which is an
encouraging sign for both dealers and the broader market.
Dealers continue to play a pivotal role, accounting for nearly half of all sales and the
majority of listings. Their ability to manage stock effectively and align pricing with market
expectations will be critical to maintaining momentum through the remainder of the year.
EV sales remain a small fraction of the used car market, and the month-to-month swings
underline just how unpredictable consumer adoption patterns remain. While new models
entering circulation create more choice, buyers are still testing the waters, which we expect
to continue for some time.
For consumers, the combination of easing prices and increased choice is creating a
favourable buying environment. For dealers, the priority will be maintaining healthy
turnover and strategically managing stock levels to stay competitive in a market that is
moving faster and becoming more complex.
