EOFY Sales Surge as Buyers Rush the Market — But Retained Values Begin to Dip

The June 2025 Automotive Insights Report (AIR), powered by Australia’s leading automotive platform AutoGrab, reveals a sharp rise in used car sales activity at the end-of-financial-year (EOFY) despite mounting pressure on vehicle retained values.

More than 212,000 used vehicles changed hands across Australia last month, representing a 10.1% increase from May. The upswing was most prominent in the nation’s largest states, including NSW (+12.5%), Queensland (+11.7%), and Victoria (+9.1%), as both consumers and dealers sought to finalise transactions before the financial year closed.

Dealerships continue to dominate the landscape, responsible for nearly half (49%) of all used car sales and over 53% of listings, as buyers seek peace of mind in dealer-backed services.

Electric and hybrid vehicle demand continued its upward trajectory. Compared to May:

  • Hybrid vehicle sales rose 21.7%
  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales jumped 29.3%
  • EV sales increased 7.6%, even as EV listings fell by 6%, pointing to tightening supply and growing appetite for sustainable mobility options.

Inventory levels remained stable, with national listings nudging up 1.2% to 330,278 vehicles. Meanwhile, the average time to sell held firm at 47 days, reinforcing ongoing consumer engagement despite fluctuating price expectations.

“The EOFY effect is real—every year we see a sales spike as urgency builds.

The pressure on retained values is something dealers will need to factor in when setting margins and managing stock. It’s encouraging to see hybrid and EV sales continue to build momentum, but pricing volatility remains a key watch-point heading into the second half of the year.
