Used Car Supply Surges In 2025 As Electrified Vehicle Sales Accelerate
31 July 2025
AutoGrab, Australia’s leading automotive intelligence platform, in partnership with the Australian Automotive Dealer Association has released the Mid-2025 Automotive Insights Report (AIR) – a data-driven analysis of trends shaping the Australian used car market in the first half of the year.
The report reveals a significant expansion in used vehicle supply, with 1,589,491 listings recorded in the first six months of 2025 – representing a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2024. In contrast, demand has remained relatively stable, with 1,133,990 used vehicles sold, reflecting a marginal year-on-year increase.
This divergence between supply and demand is contributing to a shift in market dynamics. Dealer sales now account for 46.7% of all transactions, up from 36.5% last year, signalling a marked return to dealership-led activity.
“The growing inventory surplus is likely to place downward pressure on prices and could result in extended selling times during the second half of 2025.
The surge in supply is primarily driven by passenger vehicles and SUVs. While SUVs continue to underpin sales growth and Utes are stable, demand for passenger vehicles has shown a noticeable decline,” said AutoGrab Chief Commercial Officer Saxon Odgers.
Electrified Vehicle Uptake Accelerates
The adoption of low-emission vehicles continues to gain momentum across the used market. Year-on-year growth figures show:
- Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales up 92%
- Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) sales up 96%
- Hybrid sales up 42%
The other standout trend in 2025 is the acceleration of electrified vehicle sales in the used market. While we are coming off a low base, used EV stock is growing, and are becoming far more visible and accessible to buyers,” said Mr Odgers.
Brand and Model Performance
Toyota retains its leadership position in used car sales, although its market share declined slightly to 15.6%, as brands such as GWM, Kia, and MG demonstrated notable sales growth.
The Ford Ranger continues to lead as the top-selling used model, with 43,030 units sold, followed by the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Corolla.
Additional Key Findings:
- BEVs now represent 1.1% of used vehicle sales, up from 0.8% in 2024.
- Private transactions declined, now comprising 53.3% of total sales, down from 63.5%.
- Retained vehicle values are lower, but pricing is stabilising with a more gradual rate of monthly decline.
- Dealer time-to-sale remains steady, while private sellers are experiencing longer selling periods.
The 2025 Mid-Year AIR offers a robust reference point for dealers, industry stakeholders, and consumers seeking clarity on market conditions and emerging trends.
